Hi there! My name is Nelly, and I’m excited to share a little about how I ended up teaching Spanish, even though I started out as an economist! Yep, that’s right—back in 2017, I graduated with my degree in economics, ready to dive into the world of numbers. But life, as it often does, had a different plan for me.
In 2018, I packed my bags and moved to Hong Kong—a bustling city where East meets West in the most vibrant way. It was there, surrounded by a world so different from my Venezuelan and Peruvian roots, that I got my first taste of teaching Spanish. It wasn’t part of the plan, but one opportunity led to another, and before I knew it, I was helping people of all ages discover the joys (and quirks!) of the Spanish language.
Around the same time, I also had my daughter, which gave me even more motivation to dive into teaching. As a mother, I wanted to make sure she could connect with both sides of her heritage—so teaching her Spanish became a must! My husband, who’s British, was also eager to learn, so our home became a fun mix of languages, with plenty of Spanglish moments!
By 2020, I realized this was more than just a side gig—it was something I truly loved. So, I decided to officially train as a Spanish teacher. It was during this time that I really leaned into what I enjoyed most about teaching: making lessons interactive, fun, and tailored to each student. Why just drill vocabulary when you can turn it into a game? Why slog through grammar rules when you can get students talking and laughing in Spanish?
Now, I’m living in the UK, continuing to create digital resources for Spanish learners, and gearing up to start teaching online soon. It’s exciting to think that I’ll be able to connect with students all over the world from my little corner here in the UK! My goal is simple: to make learning Spanish as fun as possible—because let’s face it, language learning should never be boring.
So, whether you’re a curious beginner, a grammar geek, or someone looking to brush up on your conversational skills, I’d love to help you on your journey. Thanks for stopping by, and I can’t wait to share more with you!
